I’m a big fan of a series of videos recently produced by the Child Mind Institute.
This one does a nice job of explaining teen depression, which affects one in seven young people. You can hear more about the condition during a conversation I recently had with young people working for The Mash student newspaper in Chicago.
I’ve been coping with depressive disorder for just about two years ever since my husband Jeff passed, and one of the ways I’ve tried to recover is by getting to know as much about depression as I can. I’m currently leading a discussion group for women who are suffering depression, and I came upon your post while looking for materials to talk about in this thursday’s meeting. I don’t know how it works for other people, but for me, information is empowering, and the more I understand the closer I get to feeling normal again.
Thanks so much for sharing your perspective and for leading that discussion group, Jeri. Knowledge is definitely power. We would be delighted to provide more information about depression on this site. Feel free to send special requests. Take care, and please continue adding your insight to drthurstone.com.
Clearing the Haze is a guide designed to help parents determine whether their child may have a substance problem and, if so, how to begin to address it. This book includes the voices and insight of experts in substance abuse counseling, young people in recovery, and parents who have lived the nightmare of adolescent addiction.
